Does reading books make people emotionally healthy?

Consider a person who's an avid reader and a person who doesn't read at all. What's the difference in their behaviour? You might have guessed that the guy who's a reader will be smarter than the other guy. There's a high chance that you're right.

Why's that? Let's dig out some facts about how reading affects a person.

  • INTELLECT - Various studies have shown that reading books improves your verbal and cognitive intelligence therefore enhancing the capacity to use better language to express your ideas and process information in the right way.
  • RATIONALITY - By going through many books, the reader develops a habit of making conclusions based on logic and reasonableness (yes this word exists).
  • PERSPECTIVE - As the reader experiences different writers and their thoughts, it makes him think in a variety of different perspectives, which is not very common in the society.
  • PROBE - We all have biasness stuck in our minds until we read and then start questioning. For example, a teenager who's new to politics will choose an ideology and become it's hardcore supporter. But a well read person will understand the need of questioning himself before having any biasness.
  • FOCUS - In this era of reels and short videos, people's attention span has significantly decreased. Since reading books demands focus, it improves your attention span and helps in overcoming distractions.

There are many other factors but I hope this is enough to answer your question.

So, yes reading books make people emotionally healthy.
